Why You Should Care About Your Garage Door Contractor's Insurance

Garage door repair services should maintain three types of insurance.  They are worker's compensation insurance, auto insurance and liability insurance. Most garage door repair companies carry both auto and liability insurance, so if you ask them if they are insured, they will most likely say yes.   However, you need to be more specific when you ask a garage door company if they carry insurance.  The type of insurance they all should carry, but perhaps only 50% of them do, is worker's compensation insurance.   The problem is that the work that is done by garage door service technicians is dangerous.  They are usually on top of a ladder and garage doors are extremely heavy.  If something goes wrong, it can sometimes go very wrong.   That makes worker's compensation insurance very expensive.   If a less reliable company encounters a worker's compensation claim and doesn't have insurance, they simply close down the company, then open as a new company.   Unfortunately the technician, working for a less reliable company, who is injured is going to be cheated out of his worker's compensation benefits.   His only recourse is to bring suit.  Unfortunately, he won't sue his employer, who has already stripped any assets he may have had in his corporation and opened another one.  He's going to sue you. The lesson here is to check your garage door company for all three types of insurance, but be most concerned about a lack of worker's compensation insurance.  This is true of any company sending technicians or workers to your home. Of course you have homeowners insurance, right?  There is one possible problem with homeowner's insurance.  Depending on the way your particular insurance company may, operate, they may refuse to defend you or pay a claim because you didn't use due diligence in hiring the contractor. Now here's the important part.  Be sure to ask any contractor who comes to your home for all his insurance documents.  That includes auto, liability and worker's compensation.  If he can't produce the documents, look for another contractor.   You'll be happy to know that Hinesville Garage Door carries all types of insurance necessary to protect their customers from possible adverse circumstances resulting from an accident.  Give us a call at 912-358-2490.  We'll be happy to give you a firm quote over the phone for any garage door repair or installation you may need.   ...read more

Garage Door Remote Control Voted Second in Handy Devices Category

Here's some news from your Hinesville Garage Door folks. Garage door openers are very handy.  In a recent poll they were voted the second most handy device following only TV remotes.  Using a remote control they allow us to open our garage  doors from our cars.  With a handy button on the wall, we can open our garage doors with the strength of our index finger.  What convenience! There is a small flaw and the slaw though.  As with every electrical or mechanical device there comes a time when the opener doesn't work.  The question is "What to do now?".   Your first impulse may be to run to your computer, type in "garage door opener" in your favorite search engine and begin researching.  Or, you may just look for the first phone number you can find for someone to call to take care of the problem.     There are some things about garage doors that you shouldn't try to do on your own.  Mainly replacing broken torsion springs.  But garage door openers can possibly be fixed by a DIY type of homeowner.   In trouble shooting, the first thing you should check are the controlling devices.  You'll need  to check your remote control and the control that is attached to the wall.   For the remote, it's a simple matter to check the batteries.  No big deal here.   The wall controller may be a little more to deal with.  There is some power going to the switch.   You'll want to check the continuity of the electrical leads going to the unit.  The outlet plug may be loose or perhaps there is some damage to the wire going to the controller.   After you check for electrical or control unit problems you'll want to check for obstructions in  the track.  The tracks must be free from any kind of material that would interfere with the operation of your door.   Also the tracks can become dented.  These dents will cause the door not to operate correctly and may stop the door literally in its tracks.  Aside from removing material in the tracks, there is not much a homeowner can do if the tracks need replaced.  That is a job for professionals. One other thing a DIYer can check is the "stop/reverse" light.  If the light is blocked or no longer points in the correct direction then your door won't work.   If you've diagnosed your garage door problem and you've determined that it is beyond your means to fix it yourself, the next thing to do is call a garage door repair company.  For a licensed and insured company in the Hinesville area, you can call Hinesville Garage Company.  You can reach them at 912-358-2490 ...read more
