I have had so many things to keep me busy this holiday season, but nothing has kept me busier than producing dog gift baskets for the Christmas Season of 2007!  This was Jupiter's Paws first Christmas season since opening in April of this year and I was prepared for a busy holiday season (just in case).  It turned out to be busier than expected but all went very well, at least up to this point in time. Some days were very long but since we enjoy this business so much it didn't bother us at all.  A lot of "lets order dinner for everyone" evenings happened and everyone was happy.  I think we enjoyed the preparation of the dog gift baskets here at Jupiter's Paws more than most would think.  Re-creating dog gift baskets is so much fun!  Keeping them individually unique keeps us on our toes and keeps our customers coming back for more!  Thanks to all of my co-workers for their smiles and great spirit through the long list of orders! We hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving Day holiday!  Whether you celebrate the occasion or not, I hope you enjoyed the day! I spent most of the day cooking for my 2 sons who live in Asheville, NC, while finishing college and then the following day I spent cooking for my husbands children!  And with all of this cooking, I didn't get to see my daughter, who lives with the "Head Big Dog" in Arizona!  Well, of course I am talking about Jupiter!  I did hear that she enjoyed her own version of a turkey dinner!  The weather has changed here in Georgia and our lack of water remains a problem.  We did get some rain, but not even half an inch!  When our water supply is down 19 feet, .38 of an inch doesn't really do much.  As for my home, I am starting to stock-pile water.  You know, the kind you buy in the store.  Ya just never know! I know this is a busy time of year for everyone, not only because it is year end time for many of our businesses, but also for those with families.  It can be such a demanding time of year.  So many are preparing to leave town or preparing to welcome family members when they arrive from out of town.  Some of you may not have large family or any family.  Whichever your case may be, I do wish you peace during this time of year and hope that everone met with success either with their business, personal lives or both. Recently I read an article (Pets of the Homeless) regarding the number of homeless in our country and their pets. (Fido Friendly, August 2007) Most people at first glance would think, "why would someone who can't house or feed themselves, keep a pet"? Well, simply put, pets are so very good for all people, as companions. For many of us, our pets are the ones at home when we arrive after a long day of work or play. They are the ones that will love us back no matter what kind of day we have had. They share unconditional love with us. Our homeless are, more often then not, very lonely. Most are down on their luck for one reason or another. Mental illness is a big contributor to our homeless population along with drug and alcohol addition. Many have pets because it keeps them "in tune" with reality. "It's what keeps them from crossing the line between reality and fantasy." We need to help feed our homeless and their pets. Until recently there wasn't any kind of help for them nor their pets. In late 2006 "Feeding Pets of the Homeless" was launched. They have partnered with many Veterinary hospitals and clinics. They collect pet food from their clients in their own communities through a campaign. The clinics and hospitals then partner with local food banks and shelters so that these items can be distributed to the homeless with pets. It's a wonderful concept where our homeless can receive a meal and also know their pet will have some nutrition as well. The article was shocking to me since I have never given any thought to our homeless with pets. I hope that when you see a campaign that is collecting pet food items you will give generously. We need more people to donate food and pet food for our homeless so that maybe some of their despair will be eased. Who knows, maybe my donation of dog food and "people" food might make the difference in one persons life for even one day.
