Fire Ants

Fire ants, both black and red, are an invasive species and their bites can be quite painful and in some cases, deadly. Identifying fire ants is difficult because they look much like ordinary ants. They're 1/8" — 1/4" long and reddish brown to black in color, and are probably best distinguished by their aggressive behavior and characteristic mound-shaped nests. Generally, mounds can swell up to 12" or more in diameter and height.Completely neglected, mounds in excess of 2' in diameter and height are not uncommon. The nests each contain several hundred-thousand ants, and can reach densities of up to 1,000 nests per acre. The underground portion is a series of interlocking galleries, tunnels and chambers that may extend to depths of 1' - 5' or more, depending onsoil type, age and colony size. Tunnels just below the soil surface extend laterally several yards out from the mound, with regular exits where the ants come out to search for food or attack. Fire ant mounds are often found with multiple queens, buried up to 25' underground and supported by a complex network of other ants performing an amazing array of tasks. Those queens willing to share, have more successful colonies since it is harder to kill multiple queens. Worker ants live only a few months, but the queens live 2 years, producing about 1000 eggs a day! When disturbed, fire ants are very aggressive. The ant grips the skin with its mandibles (jaws) and stings its victim several times in a circular pattern around the point ofmandibleattachment. Because of the ant's aggressive nature and capacity for multiple stings, an attack usually results in several stings. Some people who are stung experience only local reaction and temporary discomfort but, in most, a swollen red area will occur followed by a sterile pustule within 24 hours. Although the venom is bactericidal, secondary infections due to scratching may occur. While a single fireant stinghurts less than a bee orwasp sting, the effect of multiple stings is painfully impressive. Don't Let the Bed Bugs Bite!

Bed bugs have been around for centuries. Documentation reaching as far back as the 17th century has told about infestations of bed bugs. In the United States, bed bugs were very common until about World War II. With the introduction of such pesticides as DDT, a great decrease in infestations occurred. Bed bugs like to hide in the cracks and electrical outlets in walls, behind wallpaper, base boards and picture frames, between beds and around the creases of mattresses and in bedding materials. They most often feed at night when people are asleep, engorging themselves on up to three times their weight of your blood. If you have an infestation, you could potentially be bitten up to 500 times each night! An adult bed bug is about 1/5-inch long, oval in shape and flat. They̢۪re generally brown except after sucking blood. Their body then becomes swollen and the color changes to a dark red. While bed bugs do not transmit any pathogens or diseases, their bites usually result in swollen red, itchy welts. You may not realize right away that bed bugs are the source of the annoying sores on your legs when you wake up in the mornings. Bed bugs are attracted by both warmth and the presence of carbon dioxide, which is what we exhale in breathing. The bugs climb up onto your skin and pierce you with two hollow tubes, one of which injects anti-coagulants and anesthetics. The other tube is used to withdraw your blood, feeding for about five minutes before returning to their hiding places. There may be a cluster of bites instead of singular ones when you awake, and this is typically caused by disturbing the bugs while they feed, causing them to detach and return to feed momentarily. A well fed bedbug can live anywhere from four to six months, while a dormant one might live without feeding for up to 18 months! If you have bedbugs, your infestation can get worse very quickly since a female bedbug can lay up to five eggs per day, and up to around 500 eggs in her lifetime. Since it takes only five weeks for hatched nymphs to grow to maturity, your problems could expand exponentially within a relatively short period of time, and infestations can be hard to control. If you suspect a bed bug infestation, it is recommended that you call both your physician and your local pest control company. On the Treasure Coast, the professionals atCOASTAL PEST CONTROL (772.879.0904)know where and how to look for bed bug infestations and have the equipment required to remove the critters. It often takes a professional 4-6 hours to do a thorough inspection and initial treatment. Please be advised that additional inspections and treatments are usually necessary. Sweet dreams! ...read more
