I have been a Stay at home since May of 2009.WOW! Time sure does fly by. Many of my friend often say " I wish I could stay home with my kids too." I count my blessings every time. What many of them don't realize is that they could be a stay at home mom too! So why don't they? I think a lot of reason is because society tell us we have to work to earn that extra paycheck each week. Here are some statics. In 2009, women made up 46.7% of the labor force and 51.4% of management, professional and related positions. In 2009, 59.2% of all women 16 years and over were in the labor force, compared to 72.0% of all men. 56.4% of all mothers with children under 1 were in the labor force. Resource: Current Population Survey, Bureau of Labor Statistics, Employment Characteristics of Families, 2008-2009 Annual Averages (2010). Still, not all moms are choosing the workforce. So why are some moms still choosing to stay home? The truth is all moms are working moms. Some moms are capable of working a full time career and their families needs with the help of the spouse. Many other moms have flexible hours that allow them to work around children school hours. Some have a built a thriving home based business and still other decide to focus all their energies on their home and family. The challenge is not to sell yourself short and determine what is the best situation for your family. We all know the benefits of receiving that paycheck at the end of the week BUT that is not always the best option. Let's take a look at what that paycheck is really worth. Second Salary $15,00.00 $30,000 $45,000 Giving 1,500 3,000 4,500 Federal Tax 4,200 8,400 12,600 State Tax 750 1,500 2,250 FICA 1,148 2,295 3,443 Child Care 9,600 9,600 9,600 Transportation 1,200 12,00 1,200 Meals 1,000 1,000 1,000 Extra Cloths/ Dry Cleaning 600 600 600 miscellaneous B'day gifts, ect.. 600 600 600 Work related expense totals 20,592 28,195 35,793 Salary minus expenses -5,598 1,805 9207 Plus child credit 2,592 1,920 1,920 Net income -3006 3,725 11,127 Net hourly rate None $1.79 $5.35 This chart is just a guide. Some people don't tithe or give. This is also based on 2 children with daycare at $400.00 per month. That was the cost the last summer my son was in day care. Meals allowed $20.00 per week 50 weeks. This also allowed $50.00 per month for cloths and dry cleaning. Transportation was only $100.00 per month. That is what my husband is spending perweeknow. Miscellaneous is for personal grooming, employee birthdays and convenience foods( girl scout cookies) ect… Check this comment I found onTip hero-website from a women who now stays at home. Posted byHeather Won December 22, 2010 1:15 PM I'm doing anything and everything I can, after having lost my job 3 months ago. We've stopped shopping at Wal-Mart because after much research and comparison shopping, we've learned they are a rip-off. Aldi and other local grocery stores are much better and carry what you need, not all the impulse stuff! I use gasbuddy.com to make sure we're paying less for gas, and we've stopped eating out completely – cooking all meals at home. We haven't eaten beef or pork in 2 years since my husband was diagnosed and survived bladder cancer. We've always been big chicken, turkey, and seafood eaters, but I like the idea of trying to do some meatless days! I'm preparing to start a garden in the spring too! We've cut back on the use of all utilities and canceled things we really don't need like Netflix; we've also switched from Satellite to Cable and we record movies for free now. We've managed to cut >$1100/mo from our expenses which is great but also makes me mad that we were wasting so much before…oh well, can't hang on to the past. Thanks for all the comments, they were helpful and they remind me to do everything I can!******* That is a lot of cutting back but it can be done. I have made some small changes myself that have made a big difference. Since I have been at home I have also found several ways to cut corners. For example I hang my cloths on the line. We all eat home cooked meals at the table again and I even started a garden! I can't wait to plant a summer crop! I have gone over our bills to make sure there is no unnecessary spending. I have actually caught several mistakes made by companies that I would not normally have seen. I still get up at 5:30 every morning and go to sleep at 11:00 but my day is full of what is important to me . I have found a home based business that enjoy building around my families schedule. My business fits into my lifestyle and beliefs . It allows me to earn while I learn from home. Each morning I wake my son up. He starts my day with the best hugs EVER. When I take him to school and do not have to worry about who will be watching him when school is out. I am able to be here for him when he is sick or take him to school activities , field trips. I am also able to help my husband out with taking his mom to hair or doctor appointments. What I really enjoy the most is being home to watch my children and grandchildren grow. No more asking for holidays or sick days, No more missing birthdays or field trips, No more telling my son he can't join a sport because I have to work and can't take him to practice. I am getting closer to that perfect balance everyday. The truth about stay at home momsis we know what works for us. It is not always that end of the week paycheck that is important. Some times a check is just is not enough!
