Kathy was wonderful to deal with. She explained everything from what the VA covered to how we want our ashes distributed. I signed with her today and in January plan to sign with her for my husband.\nI would recommend her to anyone interested in final preparations. The way our money for the final preparations is invested is also a very big plus. Our ashes will be at sea on the barrier reef to promote the environment of the reef. ...read more

What can I do with my cremated remains?

Once you have decided to be cremated you need to decide what to do with your cremains. A lot of people choose to go the more traditional routes that follow religious or family traditions such as internment of the ashes in a church, private or National cemetery complete with headstone or marker. This option with the exception of a National Cemetery usually adds cost to the cremation because you must purchase the wall vault or grave that the urn is placed in. You may however depending on the rules of a particular cemetery be able to share a grave with a spouse or family member even if they had a traditional burial. In this case you would still be charged for an opening and closing of the grave. Another popular option is to scatter the ashes at sea or in a lake or pond that the deceased was fond of. The family can do this on their own as long as they follow all state or federal environmental rules or they can use a company that provides this service. One of the most popular locations for scattering of the ashes in Florida is the Neptune Memorial Reef which can be viewed on You Tube.com where many divers have videotaped their dives. More and more since cremation has become more popular (over 65% in parts of the country) people are starting to think outside of the box and coming up with very unique ideas for how they want done with their ashes. Here are a few unique final wishes from some of my clients to their families. Delaying the service until the first day of deer hunting season and then having the memorial service in the backyard of the old family farm and following that, firing the ashes from the old muzzle loader they use to signal the first hunt of the year, followed by the first hunt and large family meal. Having the kids play a round of golf and scattering the cremains along the way. (With the proper permission of course) Planting a tree in each of the children’s backyard and placing some ashes in each hole. Having the ashes pressed under tremendous pressure and being turned into a “diamond”. So you see, there is no end to what you can do with your cremains, you are limited only by your individual beliefs and your imagination. ...read more

Cremation and What Will The Kids Think?

Typically, when I am sitting with someone discussing cremation services and they have adult children, they worry about what the kids will think if they choose direct cremation services instead of traditional burial. People are worried that their kids will feel they won’t get proper closure when they die if their body isn't laid out in a coffin for all to see. The response I have gotten from most of my clients when they have made this decision is, the kids are relieved and thank their parent’s for doing the responsible thing and taking care of these arrangements themselves. Why? Most adult children as their parent’s age, begin to worry about the funeral arrangements of their parents but seldom do they bring this up as a topic of conversation and hope that when the time comes, they will not be the one in charge of making these arrangements and if they are that there is enough money to pay for it and that they will choose something to honor their parent’s wishes in the way they wanted. It’s an uncomfortable thing for people to talk about and with parents and their children living in different parts of the country so often today, it’s the last thing they want to talk about during a once a year holiday visit. If you pre-plan direct cremation services you are giving one of the greatest gifts you can to your children, peace of mind. You have made all of the decisions, there is no cause for arguing among the kids, they make one simple phone call and everything is taken care of. Your kids can still have a memorial service for you but at their leisure, when it’s convenient for them and if you take the time to fill out a memorial book with things like memories of them as children and favorite recipes and placing items in a memorial chest, they can use this during the memorial service or dinner following and will appreciate this more than dropping everything and flying across the country immediately and going into a funeral home and being told that some things you thought were paid for weren't or just being up-sold merchandise and services you never intended for them to buy in the first place. ...read more
