Greening the Holidays

Ah December, can you believe it?  Where has 2011 gone?  And now we are on top of multiple holidays, a time for crazy days and good time get together.  Let’s continue to do our part for everyone as a sign of good will by adding some simple green options to our holiday activities. Decorating with lights?  Now is the best time to switch to LED light sets.  LED lights use 90% less energy and some stores will even give you are credit if you return old lights&purchase; new LED lights @ the same time. Make your own cards&gift-wrap from leftover magazines & bags.  Top with leftover ribbon or strips of fabric.  Want even easier gift-wrap, use old pretty scarves & sweaters to wrap.  You’ll be the talk of the town.  If you do use paper be sure to recycle in another project or add to your compost pile. Have kids contribute to the dining feast with their handmade artwork or send them out on a nature scavenger hunt.  Simple branches with glass ornaments make a beautiful centrepiece. Buy local for everything from food to gifts to the Christmas tree.  Did you know that tree growers often use as many as 40 different pesticides during the tree’s life?  Look for a local grower who doesn’t use pesticides.  Better yet, get a tree local, without pesticides AND in a pot so you can plant it in your garden once the holiday has passed.  You’ll love it for years to come. Why not make a gift this year?  I tell my husband that the two gifts I like are either handmade OR if someone buys my household staples for me in advance.  My friend has a lovely tradition in her family.  They gather together in front of a roaring fireplace and provide a “gift from the heart” to each other.  This may be a story, skit, scrapbook, photos, song, poem or art.  When all the gifts are gone what do we remember most?  We remember the gifts from the heart. As we cross into a new year, think about renewal.  Recycle & donate what you can, help others. Whatever you celebrate, stay safe, happy and eco-focused. ...read more

Buyer's noses lead the way

A home buyer is excited to see the inside of your home for sale.  The outside curb appeal looks great, let's keep that going past the front door.  Even before the Buyers see the inside, they could be turned off immediately by scents, bad ones. Buyer's noses lead the way through the front door so be sure that the house has been professionally cleaned.  If there were smokers in the home, a fresh coat of paint will help to cover up some of the smells.  Avoid toxic cleaners so you don't wind up adding negative additives to the indoor air. Avoid using scented candles and air fresheners.  Note that many folks who potentially may view your home are allergic or have asthma.  Others may be opposed to certain scents. A local Home Stager can help you long before the home is ever listed by walking through your home&formulating; a room-by-room action plan for selling success. Keep your indoor air fresh&clean and help get those buyers through the door&saying "I want it!" ...read more
