Florida Water Conservation: A Challenge to All

By the year 2025, it is estimated that Floridians will use an additional 2.0 billion gallons of water per day.  As Florida continues to grow, pressure is put on the water resources of the state and the need to ensure that these resources are available for future generations becomes increasingly important.  Floridians have always enjoyed a quality of life that is unquestionably linked to the health of our water resources.   Water suppliers are making good progress toward meeting projected 2025 demands, but it is not feasible to build enough infrastructure to meet all demands in periods of extreme drought.  Developing alternative water sources is simply one element of a diverse, sustainable water supply system.  Perhaps the cheapest way to develop new water is through effective water conservation practices.  Historically underutilized, conservation could meet a significant portion of projected 2030 demand if it were given greater emphasis.  Water already in the distribution pipeline is usually cheaper than developing new sources.  Many areas of the state could meet much of their short and mid-term water demand, and delay the capital costs of new water supply infrastructure, with the implementation of additional water use efficiencies. The good news is that Florida has the mechanisms in place to develop solutions to these issues.  We need to expand our efforts to protect and preserve our water resources using the tools that have been developed by innovative technology companies. A good example that many commercial properties should consider is a “Smart” timer or controller for their lawn or sprinkler system. While researching products online, one of the best modules is made by a company called Weathermatic. The SmartLink  features a standard Flow Smart Module for flow learning, logging and problem reaction. SmartLink protection monitors high and low flow conditions with user-defined reactions, giving the commercial property owner the ability to see, in real time, the amount of excess water being wasted while monitoring the overall health of the landscape. And best of all, there’s an app for that! It’s completely monitored and control by your iPhone or tablet. In order to purchase a module like this you need to find a distributor. One of our favorites, due to the reliability and longevity of the merchant, is Professional Supply Co. They keep current with the latest trends in the irrigation market, and actually provide online tools like a turf fertilizer calculator. They can be found at www.professionalsupply.com. The bottom line is this: EVERYONE needs to do their part in the conservation of our most precious natural resource. Remember, even if you had all the gold in the world, without water, we don’t exist. ...read more

The grass will require a bit more watering than your current lawn, but you will get better results. Another option is mixture of two types of fescue, a tall fescue and a creeping red fescue, which is extremely shade tolerant; in areas of complete shade, the red fescue will help fill in the bare spots. Although there are several aerating machines on the market, most are either noisy, smelly or a little too much for an average size lawn. We might suggest a manual aerating tool instead. Spread it around When spreading seeds, it's important to make sure you don't throw too much into adjacent beds. Work side to side, and then work back over the same area at right angles to the original. You can either throw the seed out by hand or use a tool that helps relieve strain on your wrist. You can have too much of a good thing. Applying too much seed can create competition for the moisture and nutrients that feel the lawn. Fertilize the new grass An all natural, bio-solid fertilizer is great for most lawns because you won't have to wait for the grass to germinate to use it. After a few weeks in the lawn, the fertilizer will break down and enter the roots of the grass. Another thing about bio-solid fertilizers is that they contain iron, an element that will help to "green-up" the lawn. And it's very versatile, so you can use it to fertilize garden beds, trees, shrubs and flowers. Remember to fertilize twice a year, once in the spring and once in the fall. Just add water Last but not least, irrigation is one of the most important elements. After the Fescue seed is spread it will germinate over the next 10 days or so, you will need to water the lawn lightly once or twice a day so the seeds stay moist. The best time is in the early morning or at night. Once the grass has some growth and has been trimmed, you will need to switch to deep soaking. This encourages newly formed roots to reach down into the soil in search of moisture. One good option for deep soaking is an oscillating sprinkler system because they do all the work. 5 tips for conserving lawn watering during the summer

5 tips to conserving water for your lawn during the summer. Homeowners can add Florida friendly landscaping techniques from watering efficiently and selecting drought-tolerant plants to making smart water planning decisions when designing or re-designing their property. Here are some tips that you may not have thought of to conserve water while irrigating your lawn and creating a beautiful landscape. 1. Micro-manage A "micro-irrigation system" uses much less water than traditional irrigation systems because it delivers water right next to targeted plants. A wireless rain sensor can automatically shut down the irrigation system after a rain, conserving water. And watering at night is not only better for plants, it also reduces water consumption by reducing evaporation. 2. Reduce lawn square footage A new landscape design can reduce the lawn’s square footage by adding an area of drought tolerant plants, cement boards and well placed stones. To help them choose the right natives, they researched local plant nurseries to ensure their selections would be able to thrive in the Florida climate. 3. Smart containers Terra-cotta pots not only let you put color where you want it but also help to control watering. Using a home’s existing gutter system can direct rainwater into a rain barrel. A hose connected to the bottom of the rain barrel makes it easy to water a nearby trees and landscaping areas. 4. Add a rain garden A rain garden is a lower area in the landscape where runoff water from your irrigation collects. It's filled with plants, and the water collects there slowly, then soaks back into the surrounding area over the following 24 to 36 hours. Landscaping experts can help you to choose plants that can handle being inundated with water for brief periods. 5. Plan before you plant Make your garden work for you by creating a landscape that is both functional and fun. With a little pre-planning in the landscape design, you can have a property that brings you joy and relaxation.
