Can't Get To a Website? Could be your ISP's DNS Server.

Once in a while, your Internet Service Provider's DNS Servers may go out of service. When this happens, you can't get to web pages by typing in the ".com" name address. Domain Name Service (DNS) servers translate the word address to the actual unique number assigned to the server hosting the website on the Internet. We add Google's free DNS servers as a backup to our Internet Service Provider servers. Your Mac will try them if the initial servers don't respond. How to add Google's Public DNS (OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard) Open your system preferences and select Network. In the Network preference pane, make sure your network connection is selected (Airport or Ethernet) and click "Advanced". Open the DNS tab and add Google's DNS servers using the "+" button.
Type 8.8.8.8 then enter
, Type 8.8.4.4 then enter. If you already have a server or two in there, it is best to add these under your existing server address so they act as a back up. If you want to use the Google addresses as your primary DNS servers, you just move them to bottom (hold Command + mouse click and move). Then just "OK" and "Apply" your way back out of the various dialogs and you should be good to go. Test that your setup is working correctly; see Testing your new settings.
