What’s Really Inside a Hospitality? You MUST Know!

What's Really Inside a Hospitality? You MUST Know!     Hospitality design encompasses many types of venues, all of which are designed to amuse, entertain or play host to the public. This includes hotels, theatres, restaurants, lounges, nightclubs, bars, country clubs and athletic clubs, conference or event venues, casinos, golf clubs, resorts, retreats, cruise ships, even airplanes. Hospitality design focuses on creating an environment that the customer desires to be in while maintaining the safety, health and welfare of the occupant as first priority.   There are many resources and publications for hospitality designers. The largest and most recognizable publication is Hospitality Design Magazine. This magazine has been published for 27 years and is released 10 times per year with extensive information about all aspects of hospitality design connecting designers and architects in the field with owners, operators and purchasing agents for the companies they serve while constantly bringing the most up to date information in the industry. (hdmag.com)   There are also many conferences and expos dedicated directly to the industry. The largest is the Hospitality Design Expo&Conference. It is the main trade show for hospitality design bringing manufacturers and design professionals together to show new products and build connections. This year it was held in Las Vegas in May and is usually held around the same time every year. (hdexpo.com). Another great conference is the Hospitality Design Summit. This event is by invitation only for top hospitality design executives. Here they collaborate ideas and visions for the industry, network, and expand skills in leadership and teambuilding. (hdmag.com). The HD Boutique is a large conference and exposition where the newest products and designs are revealed, companies are introduced, and large networking parties are held directly for the industry. (hdboutique.com).   Within the hospitality design field there are many awards and achievements recognized. Hospitality Design Magazine hosts the annual Hospitality Design Awards for Creative Achievement. There are quite a few categories which were developed by their panel of prestigious designers. Winners of the awards are featured in the magazine. The next award given to designers in this field is the Platinum Circle award and is presented at the Hospitality Design Expo & Conference's Gala Dinner Dance. This award is given to professionals that make a significant difference in the hospitality design field. Another award given in conjunction with the Hospitality Design Expo & Conference is the IIDA/HD Product Design Awards. This award is sponsored by the International Interior Design Association and Hospitality Design Magazine to recognize great quality design. The last award is the Best of Boutique Award which is given at the HD Boutique show. The award honors the most innovative products offered at the boutique. (iida.org)   Hospitality Design is a very fun and lucrative option within the interior design field. There are many resources and networking options available in this field which allow professionals to experience and grow their business while making valuable connections with both manufacturers and peer designers.   Resources: www.hdmag.com www.hdboutique.com www.hdexpo.com www.iida.org ...read more

What is Sustainable Design ?

According to Ecodesign.org, there are five principles of ecological design. First being that, “Solutions Grow from Place” they state that “Ecological design begins with the intimate knowledge of a place. It is small scale and direct, responsive to local conditions and people. If we are sensitive to the nuances of place, we can inhabit without destroying.” Their second principle follows to “Make Nature Visible”; “Making natural cycles and processes visible, brings the designed environment back to life. Effective design helps inform us of our place within nature.” The third principle suggests to “Design with Nature”; “By working with living processes, we respect the needs of all species. Engaging processes that regenerate rather than deplete, we become more alive…Effective design helps inform us of our place within nature.” The fourth principle is “Ecological Accounting Informs Design” this is to “Trace the environmental impacts of design, and use this information to determine the ecologically sound design possibilities.” And lastly, the fifth principle says that “Everyone is a Designer”, one should “Listen to every voice in the design process. As people work together to heal their places, they also heal themselves.” ...read more
