Jessica & Mark Matus Enjoy First Home and First $12 Electric Bill

Tax auditor Jessica Matus takes the same care looking for a new home that she takes analyzing financials. She and then-fiancé Mark Matus spent two years looking at more than 100 homes throughout Sacramento. Only one made the cut: A home in Lennar's Cazadero community in Rancho Cordova, which combined energy-efficient features with a SunPower® SunTile® roof-integrated solar system. After marrying in September 2007, the couple moved into their new home in January. Taking care to find the right home paid off. Their first energy bill of $12 bodes well for more low bills to come. COWORKER'S LOW ENERGY BILLS INSPIRE COUPLE TO GO SOLAR After marrying in September 2007, Jessica and Mark Matus bought a single-story, 1,822-square-foot home in Lennar's Cazadero community in Rancho Cordova. They chose Cazadero because it was the only community to combine energy-efficiency features with a SunPower solar system. Jessica's coworker, who lived in a solar-powered home, frequently boasted of $15 energy bills. The couple wanted to save money while doing the right thing. "We were hoping the solar system would help offset some of that new home cost," Jessica said. "And we loved that Lennar built energy efficiency into the home from the inside." SOLARPLUS ENERGY-EFFICIENT HOME MAKES METER RUN BACKWARDS Like every new home in Lennar's Cazadero community, Jessica's and Mark's came with SOLARplus, an energy-efficient system whose features include a radiant heat barrier, high-efficiency lighting and appliances, dual-glazed windows, and a SunPower SunTile® 2.3 kW roof-integrated solar system. Everything works together to maximize Jessica's and Mark's energy savings, which the couple monitors online. "We can watch our meter running. Everything works together to maximize Jessica's and Mark's energy savings, which the couple monitors online. "We can watch our meter running backwards," Jessica said. A roof-integrated solar system means they don't have to sacrifice appearances. "The solar tiles really blend in," Jessica said. "They're aesthetically pleasing and look just like they are a part of your roof." COUPLE'S MONTHLY ELECTRIC BILL DROPS FROM $200 TO $12 After watching their electric bill plummet from $200 to $12 in the first month, Jessica and Mark were already singing the praises of their SOLARplus home. Despite a cold winter, their utility bills stayed low, due to SOLARplus energy efficiency features. "I turn on the heater for five minutes," Jessica said. "It stays warm for hours because it's so sealed." The summer months, with their longer days, promise even greater savings. The couple expects to sell power back to the grid. "I think we'll end up zeroing out our bill," Jessica said. Visithttp://www.lennarsacramento.comfor more information on SOLARplus homes in Sacramento. ...read more

Dawes Family Goes Solar, Sending Energy Back to the Grid with Lennar

Jim and Janice Dawes bought their new home to be closer to their grandkids—the solar system was just an extra perk. But now that they're paying about $26 a month on electricity and adding power to their local grid, they've been converted.Jim and Janice Dawes never gave much thought to solar power. But they thought a great deal about their sons and grandkids. After both sons moved to Roseville, Jim and Janice faced a choice: commute 300 miles each week round-trip from Cupertino, or sell their house and move. They chose a two-minute commute—a new home in a Lennar community that, unlike others, came with a SunPower SunTile® 2.3 kW solar power system.FAMILY BRINGS JIM AND JANICE DAWES TO ROSEVILLE— SOLAR POWER BRINGS THEM TO IRONCRESTWhat started with the simple desire to stay close to their family ended with a decision to buy a new home. "We thought, ‘No sense in staying retired in San Jose and driving to Roseville,'" Jim said. Their ideal home had to fit certain criteria: proximity to grandkids; one-story; three-car-garage. From the homes that matched these criteria, Jim and Janice decided on a Lennar home because it was the only one equipped with a solar power system. "We said, ‘Let's give it a try,'" Jim said. "While we hadn't thought much about solar, we started getting excited when we learned it came standard with the home's features."SUNPOWER BLENDS SEAMLESSLY INTO ROOFThe Lennar home with SOLARplus at Fiddyment Farm is equipped with a SunPower SunTile® 2.3 kW solar system that requires no maintenance and turns on automatically each day. Sleek, black solar tiles blend seamlessly with the roof. "You can't even tell they're there because they're built right into the roof tile," Jim said. "It's not intrusive at all." Jim and Janice monitor real-time system performance online. The home's other energy efficient features include thermal-paned windows and well-insulated ceilings and walls.DAWES FAMILY GETS THE BEST OF BOTH WORLDS— COMFORT AND SAVINGSIn an area where many residents spend hundreds of dollars a month on electricity during the summer, Jim and Janice Dawes spend an average of $26, thanks to their SunPower solar system.* "Sometimes the meter goes backwards," Jim said. "We're generating more electricity during the daytime than we use.  It surprised me. I didn't think it would do as well as it obviously has." Now, they don't have to choose between comfort and low electricity bills. "We just use what makes us comfortable," Jim said.  "I would never move into a new place that didn't have solar power."Visithttp://www.lennarsacramento.comfor more information on SOLARplus homes in Sacramento. ...read more
