Best Way to Prepare a Paving Stone Driveway

Here is a general idea of how best to prepare a paving stone driveway. Like a good paint job – it’s all about the base preparation. Realize that multiple times a day, the weight of heavy vehicles will be creating significant forces on the driveway and it’s underlayment. According to ICPI (Interlocking Concrete Paving Institute) engineering standards, a driveway should be dug a minimum of 9" deep. After the excavation care should be taken to use a plate vibrator (you can rent them at a local rental yard) to first compact the native soils. You should take into account the grades and elevations of a driveway so that the final installation of your pavers are such that water will run away from your house/foundation to where you want it to go i.e. drains, planter beds, or to the street/gutter.  Also this is a great time to address any water issues you may have. Most homes downspouts dump all the roof rain water next to the house at the foundation - not a good situation.  The water can be erosive, cause foundation settlement which in turn can create cracks on interior walls and potential structural problems with your home in time).  Consider connecting your downspouts to new drain lines that you can easily run under the pavers to new "pop-up" bubbler outlets in order to move this water away from your house foundation.   The next step is to place a special woven nylon mesh fabric, called Geotextile over the entire driveway surface area. This is an “isolation” membrane that separates the bad clay soils below, from the good “engineered” materials you will be placing (and compacting) above. This "engineered" fabric (typically found under roadways throughout the state of California) further helps support the driveway system. If you have to overlap Geotextile pieces, it should be a minimum of 6". We use 50d nails (5” long) and 1/4 x 1 1/4" washers to "pin" down the fabric at intervals.   Now come those good “engineered” materials that you will carefully place over the Geotextile fabric.  Purchase Class II Road Base from your local construction or garden materials yard. This material is composed of stones from ¾” down to fines which is a granular stone.  Once wet and compacted this special "road base" gets hard, almost like concrete, yet is still a bit flexible (perfect for pavers). Here is the important part: The Class II base rock should be compacted in lifts of 2" to 95% - 98% compaction (again using the “Vibraplate”). This must be done 3 times for a total of 6" (min) of compacted Class II base. Why is this important?  Especially here in Northern California we have "expansive clay" soils that swell up in the wintertime with rainwater, and significantly shrink in the dry, hot summer weather. This significant soil movement up and down is what causes all our concrete and asphalt driveways to crack in time, look ugly, and creates safety/tripping hazards.    Next you should screed (grade and level) a consistent and flat 1/2 -1" layer of "bedding sand" (sharp angle concrete sand is what you want) on which you will lay the stones.   Now the fun begins, laying the stones. But what about the many varieties of pavers? My company, Hill Construction Co specializes and we are experts in the installation of fabulous new "interlocking" paving stone driveways, walkways and patios.  Over the years we have laid all the various types of pavers.  You might be surprised to learn that here in Northern California there are 7 local manufacturers of paving stones with over 65 stone choices... then there are the many color blends, and great stone patterns to choose from. Most pavers come in 3 different sizes too.  At Hill Construction Co we are professional contractors and designers who have perfected a system to quickly show you all your stone options, so that you can easily choose the perfect stone for your taste and budget.    Next you will lay the stones according to your desired pattern. Note: We have done hundreds of jobs and will also tell you the best stone patterns; most popular color blends and further help you by making valuable recommendations for your project based upon our wealth of experience. We make it easy and fun!    Once all the field stones are laid, you will want to scribe and cut all the edges stones, either straight or curving, according to the lay-out/design of the project. To finish off the job properly, take one of the stone sizes (typically a 6x9" rectangle) and set this stone in a concrete mix on around the entire unsupported perimeter edges. This is called a "soldier course" and helps to elegantly "frame", set-off the field pattern, and lock in the edges.  Note:You do not need to set these edge stones in concrete if they butt-up against already solid surfaces, for example a concrete house foundation or concrete garage slab.   Now its time to broom sweep a #30 mesh sand between all the paving stone joints, and then plate vibrate the stones in two different directions to "seat" the stones in the bedding sand and to lock the stones against one another with the sand tightly compacted into the joints. This is why they are called "interlocking pavers."    Installed properly, in this manner, you will have a gorgeous new paving stone driveway whose color blend can compliment and enhance the colors of your house, trim, roof, and any stone veneers you may have… plus it should last lifetime…and you will never see an ugly, cracked surface again!    But why take on such an involved and back-breaking project yourself? At Hill Construction Co we have offices in 3 strategic locations (Menlo Park, Seaside, San Rafael) to help you with your paving stone driveway, walkway, patio needs. Our goal is to give you a fabulous installation, done right the first time, that will significantly increase the beauty, curb appeal, livability and value of your home... and in just a matter of days! Our efficient and professional crews can install a typical driveway in this manner in just 3-4 days~! And it is more affordable than might think (plus we offer financing to truly help make your bigger project a reality)! We do great work; offer superior expertise, “red carpet” customer service and best-value pricing!    Hill Construction Co is the paver installer you can trust.  We serve the entire San Francisco Bay Area, as well as the Wine Country and the Monterey Peninsula. We are ICPI and NCMA certified, and A+ rated and accredited by the Better Business Bureau. Also ask about ourSPECIAL OFFER:Free sealer of your new paving stone job between now and the end of summer. It is the ultimate way to protect and finish off your paving stone installation in style PLUS we use a special paver sealer that will stabilize and harden the joint sand in order to stop weeds from growing between the pavers! Finally we also install the most gorgeous artificial grass, stone garden walls, fire pits, fireplaces, water features, outdoor living spaces.  Check out our website:http://www.hillcopavers.comto learn more about Hill Construction Co and see many of our impressive local jobs.   Give Hill Construction Co a call today at (650) 380-9712 for a FREE, no obligation design consultation&proposal. We would love to have you become yet another happy and very satisfied customer! ...read more
