We had our pool two seasons before we had ACS install our HELIOCOL solar pool heater. We didn't swim much before. Now we keep our pool solar heated to 90 degrees and swim every day. We are very pleased with our HELIOCOL solar pool heater that ACS installed in March. We have enjoyed many more hours of pool time this year than we did without it. It is great to be able to go swimming without that initial cold shock. The ACS installation crew was very professional and did a beautiful job. We are truly spoiled now. Letter to the editor AVP In the US ideas and technologies with profit potential, for special interest, proliferate while alternative ideas which promote individual independence but reduce revenues’ of established conventional suppliers, receive little support. Some call it the golden rule. I have been a solar energy system contractor based in Lancaster and serving the High Desert since 1983. Our High Desert receives the most solar energy in the nation and yet the percentage of Desert Residents that utilize our abundant, clean and free energy resource is minuscule. The most common use of solar energy world-wide is domestic water heating. The United States has the lowest percentage of solar heated domestic water of any industrialized country on earth; less than 1 percent. Most regions of the US have more available solar energy than Germany and yet 45% of Germans have solar heated water. 85% of Austrians use solar energy, which probably explains former Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger’s ardent solar advocacy. Solar domestic water heating is a code requirement in many places in the world such as Australia and Israel. Almost 100% of Israel’s domestic hot water is solar. The US is the largest consumer of energy, the most outspoken critic of global pollution and the biggest purveyor of the notion that mankind is effecting global warming. The question most often ask of our company is: Should I lease or buy my solar electric system? Some people just can't afford, or can't qualify for a loan, to buy a solar electric system, but they may qualify for a solar lease. When you purchase your solar electric system you dramatically raise your home's value as soon as it's installed. But if you lease solar, you've created a debt liability that few home buyers will want to assume. Who wants to assume a lease on a used solar electric system that will only save 7 to 19% on your electric bill? Should your potential home buyer not want to assume your legally binding debt, you may have to pay a hefty penalty to get out of your lease agreement. A premise of value made by solar leasing companies is that they will maintain the solar installation. A properly installed solar electric system requires almost no maintenance other than an occasional rinsing with a garden hose to get the dust off the collector modules. Most quality solar modules carry a 25 year manufacturer's warranty and the California Energy Commission requires the installation contractor to warrant all of the system components for 10 years. A purchased solar electric system in the High Desert, after State and Federal subsidies, will pay for itself with saved energy dollars in less than 10 years, and will continue to provide an ever increasing tax free return for many decades. In reality a solar electric system lease is really a power purchase agreement. You are agreeing to allow an investor to use your property to install a system to harness the solar energy you receive and in turn they agree to sell the energy to you at a profit, for 15 to 20 years, but for slightly less than your electric utility charges. Since you don't own the system, the investor keeps the Federal solar tax credits and State rebates. Since the solar components are a lease company business expense, the system value may be depreciated which affords the lease holder an additional tax advantage. In the future, when Cap and Trade laws move forward, a solar electric system may earn RECs (renewable energy credits) that can be sold to entities to offset carbon production.
