As today, handbooks on decorating were consulted. Owen Jones an architect and theorist of color, published a handbook in 1856 called ‘The Grammar of Ornament’. His idea on the use of color was that it was aesthetically correct to use a complex pattern starting with one main color and adding many accent colors.
