As today, handbooks on decorating were consulted. Owen Jones an architect and theorist of color, published a handbook in 1856 called ‘The Grammar of Ornament’. His idea on the use of color was that it was aesthetically correct to use a complex pattern starting with one main color and adding many accent colors. The Victorian style, encompassing all things elegant, shiny, and frivolous, was popular between the 1840s and the early 1900s. Victorian lighting ranged from ornate candelabras to oil lamps to early electric lamps.
