Types of Car Security
Car thefts happen as often as a million times per year. Thieves steal cars for joy rides, for spare parts or even to commit crimes. To protect your car from being stolen by criminals, there are many security solutions available on the market, but they can essentially be classified within four types of anti-theft systems.
Audible Car Security Alarms – This is the most common type of car security system on the market. Car alarms wail loudly to alert everyone within a wide radius that a theft is in progress. The drawback is that it can become more of an irritant than an effective call for help. In addition some systems are so sensitive that they “cry wolf,” going off when there is no theft in progress, such as when a heavy truck is passing close by.
Silent Alarms – These alarms send a text message or other message to the car owner that a theft is in progress. The drawback with this system is that the owner may be too far away to respond in time, or they may respond and come into a dangerous situation with an armed criminal.
Immobilization Systems – Also known as “engine kill,” this form of security is the most effective. It essentially stops the car from operating in the case of unauthorized entry. Many immobilization systems also use sophisticated designs to defeat circumvention by expert thieves, making the vehicle an unattractive target.
Vehicle Tracking Systems – In the event of a successful theft, this kind of security system allows the vehicle to be tracked by transmitting a signal that nearby law enforcement personnel can detect and follow. The most popular and well-known type of tracking system is the “LoJack Stolen Vehicle Recovery System.” Another is the OnStar system developed by General Motors.
