Qualifications for Beginning Acupuncture School

Acupuncture is perhaps the oldest form of medicine available. This ancient Chinese form of healing applies a holistic approach to care for many ailments. In order to practice as an acupuncturist, first attend acupuncture school. Prior to attending school to become an acupuncturist, there are several qualifications a potential student must have. 

1. Students aspiring to study acupuncture must first get a bachelor's degree, as acupuncture programs actually fall under the classification of a graduate program. Potential students either need to have their degree from an accredited university, or have a specific number of hours studied. While there is no universal undergraduate program that must be completed, different schools have different requirements. Today, many schools prefer students have a degree in a science-related field, but this varies by institution.


2. Make sure to complete at least 60 to 90 credit hours of undergraduate courses before applying. If you do not plan on graduating from an undergraduate school, this number of credit hours are generally required for admission. Courses in biology, chemistry, anthropology and psychology are recommended to be included in courses of study.


3. Students should earn at least a 2.5 GPA in their undergraduate program to be considered for admission to a masters in acupuncture. Some specific schools may have higher GPA requirements, or a certain GPA required for science courses.


4. Take the GRE. Many require GRE schools for admissions to their program. Even if the school you are applying to doesn't require the GRE, it can show your aptitude for the rigorous three-year program, and possibly increase your chances for admittance.
