How to Use a Bokken
Many of the martial arts styles have their own weapons associated with that particular discipline. The bokken is a wooden practice sword. It is used in training exercises, and affords the martial arts student the opportunity to simulate fighting situations while reducing the risk of injury to themselves, and others.
Though the bokken is a practice sword, it is still a weapon, and should be treated with respect and care when used.
- Ensure that you have a firm grip on the bokken before moving on to the next step. You want to ensure that it does not slip out of your hands mid-swing, or as you strike your opponent. A proper bokken grip is similar to holding a baseball bat. Once gripped properly, extend the bokken in a vertical position, towards your opponent. Positioning the weapon this way allows for efficient counter striking.
- Ensure that you are properly positioned. Balance and footwork are key. Bend your knees slightly, and angle your body sideways. This ensures that you have a broad base, and that you are minimizing yourself as a target.
- Take a wide stance. One foot should be placed in front of the other. Again, the key is balance. One foot should be facing your attacker, while the other should line up with your body.
- Raise your bokken high, above your head. As you strike your opponent, the bokken should come down firmly, and in a straight line. The next attacking stroke should be a sideways and have an upward motion, similar to the swing of a baseball bat.
- Practice, practice, practice. You will have mastered the use of the bokken when your moves become swift, firm, and fluid. In order to master attacks, as well as counter-attacks, make sure that you take turns as the attacker and the defender.
