How to Troubleshoot a Blank Monitor

If your monitor goes blank there are a few things you can check before you take it to a service center. These steps can save you hundreds of dollars if any of them repairs the blank monitor. This article will teach you how to troubleshoot a blank monitor.

  1. Check the monitor for damage such as cracks. A cracked monitor will not work properly.


  2. Press keys and move the mouse around to ensure the computer is not in the sleep mode. Most computers go into sleep mode after long periods of idleness and may seem broken.


  3. Press the power button to make sure the computer and monitor is on.


  4. Turn off the monitor and the computer.


  5. Unplug all cables and wires that are connected to the monitor. Also unplug any cables between the monitor and computer.


  6. Check the cables for damage and replace if necessary. Reconnect the cables to monitor and make sure they are firmly connected.


  7. Use a surge protector to connect the power cord to the monitor.


  8. Use a different monitor to connect to the computer to ensure that the issue is not the monitor or the computer.


  9. If the computer works fine, the issue is the monitor and it may need service.
