How to Train With a Samurai Sword
Training with a samurai sword takes a lot of practice, dedication and hard work. As a beginner it is especially important that you know how to hold and swing your samurai sword to get the best benefits from it. You must learn how to train properly with a samurai sword.
- Hold the top of the handle lightly with your right hand. Take your left hand and hold the handle about 4 cm from down from your right hand. The placement of your left hand can vary a little depending on the length of the sword.
- Tighten he pinky finder and the ring finger strongly on the sword, and then tighten the middle finger just lightly. Your thumb and forefinger should be touching slightly. The sword should be held the same with both hands. There should now be looseness in the hand, and be careful not to use all of your strength to hold the handle. Too much strength on your handle will prevent your from swinging the sword the way you need and want.
- Apply the greatest power to the handle when you swing the sword. In the beginning power seems to go into the shoulder when you try to put it into the handle. When the power toes into the sword it cannot be swung fast, so work on removing the power form the shoulder.
- Swing the sword like you are throwing a fishing rod. Then, stretch both arms out and try to draw a big circle, making sure the orbit or the sword passes through the center of your body. When you swing the sword down strongly tighten the pinky finger and ring finger.
- Finish swinging the sword and make the handle head of the sword come out directly in front of your navel. You should have a space between the handle head and navel of about one fist. Bend one elbow a little, and make sure to relax your shoulders, and tighten both armpits lightly.
