How to Start a Business Service That is Free to the Customer

The ability to offer a service that is free to the customer can attract a great deal of customers to your business. Often times, companies will attract customers with free services with the hope of converting them to paying customers. Constructing your services in a manner that offers your customers a deal they can't pass is essential.

  1. Establish a service that completes the specific need of your customers. Describe your ideal customer and develop a service that would be most helpful to that type of person. Consider offering a service that will save your customer time, money and hassle.

  2. Advertise your service on the Internet. Allow your website to be as interactive and automatic as possible. This will allow the customer to see instant results. If the customer has the ability to use the service for free over the Internet, without needed to involve staff, you can reduce the cost to you for the service you are providing. Create a brief and concise article and a short video that you can post on your website. These additions will further promote your business and assist you with enrolling new customers.

  3. Clearly state to the customer that you are providing free services to them for a trial period. Allow your trial period to last between one week and three months. Once the trial period is complete, notify the customer that a purchase is required to continue receiving the benefits of the service. Most often, software companies use this method to attract new customers. Additionally, communication services, cable channels and Internet service providers also use this manner.

  4. Off the customer a basic service package with the option to add additional upgrades. Create a bundle of basic features to your customers for free, and one or more additional services that can be purchased to accompany the basic package.

  5. Offer a full service plan for free that does not expire then solicit advertisements from companies to generate revenue for your business. Most notably, social media outlets like Facebook and Twitter use this option to provide unlimited free services to their customers.
