How to Run an Art Gallery

Art galleries function as display spaces for art as well as a shop and a meeting place for people in the art community. If you want to run an art gallery, you will need to get a bachelor's degree in art, get experience in the field, rent a gallery space and find artwork to show.

  1. Get a bachelor's degree in art. You may want to get a bachelor's degree in studio art with a minor in art history, or get a bachelor's degree in art history. While you are getting your undergraduate degree, try to do an internship at an art gallery. This will give you helpful experience for when you run your own art gallery later. Also, make sure you network with the people at the gallery. They may be able to help you get a job later.

  2. Work in the field. After graduation, get a job at an art gallery. Get in touch with the people you met when you did your internship and inquire about job openings. After you are hired at an art gallery, work there for a few years to gain experience and save money.

  3. Rent a gallery space. When you are ready to strike out on your own and open your own art gallery, you will need to rent a gallery space. Make sure to find a space with a convenient location and ample parking.

  4. Find artwork to show at your gallery. If you want to run an art gallery, you must have artwork to show in your gallery. Visit other shows in your area to find out who the up and coming artists are. Contact them about showing work at your gallery. Also, put up a website with a call for submissions.
