How to Prep a Turkey for Cooking
A roasted or smoked turkey is a traditional part of the American meal during Thanksgiving and Christmas. Few things can ruin the entire occasion, however, than a poorly prepared turkey. Furthermore, improperly handled birds can also lead to food-borne illnesses that can affect everyone.
- Thaw your turkey at a temperature below 40 degrees Fahrenheit. The best way to do this is to put it in the refrigerator and keep the temperature between 32 and 40 degrees. Thawing times are typically 24 hours for each 4 pounds, according to the USDA.
- Remove the giblets from inside the turkey and put them in a pan with boiling water.
- Place the turkey in a roasting pan large enough to hold the turkey. Make sure the pan is large enough that all parts of the turkey are inside the pan.
- Set the oven to 450 degrees.
- Lightly fill the turkey's inside cavity with stuffing.
- Use clamps or a string to tie the turkey's drumsticks together. Fold the wings beneath its back.
- Spread partially melted butter on the skin of the turkey and inside the skin as well. Season the butter to taste.
- Put the turkey in the pan and cover the pan with tin foil.
- Place the turkey in the oven and cook until the thermometer shows 180 degrees when you place it through the turkey breast.
