How to Open a Bookstore

Bookstores are becoming more than just a place to buy a book. Bookstores focus on creating a learning environment by providing a comfortable atmosphere for reading. Bookstores encourage visitors to relax with a cup of coffee and enjoy the surroundings. Consider these things as you learn how to open a bookstore.

  1. Have a centralized location where people can access your bookstore. You should have a building that is large enough to house a variety of books, as well as an area to sit, read and enjoy the atmosphere.

  2. Apply for a business permit through your city and/or state. You will need a license to sell and buy products for public use.

  3. Make contacts with local publishers to sell books in your bookstore. Publishers are your connection to the world of books.

  4. Once you have a building and books, you will need to hire some employees to keep the bookstore running.

  5. Advertise your bookstore by joining the communities of MerchantCircle, creating a Facebook page, placing flyers at local schools and/or advertising in a local newspaper or magazine.

  6. Set your business hours, prices and begin operation as bookstore in your community.
