How to Measure for Making Window Valances and Treatments
Taking the time to make your own valances guarantees you’ll have beautiful and unique window treatments. It’s easier than you think. Before you start sewing, you’ll need accurate measurements, so grab your measuring tape and step up to your window.
Valance Window Treatments
- Measure across the window frame. Record this as “actual width.”
- Decide how low you want your valance to hang. In general, a valance will hang one-quarter to one-third down the window. Record this as “actual length.”
- Determine the fabric measurement for the valance. Double the actual width measurement if you want a basic valance. Triple the actual width measurement if you want a swag-style valance. Quadruple the actual width measurement if you have extra large windows, or want extra swags.
- Add eight inches to the actual length measurement for the valance header, the rod casing and the finished hem. A valance header refers to the fabric over the curtain rod.
Basic Curtain Window Treatments
- Measure across the window. You want to measure from the outside edge of the window casing to the other outside edge. Record this as “actual width,” and remember that most windows use two curtain panels. You’ll want the curtains to be slightly larger than the actual width.

Tips
