How to Make a Big Truck Into a Camper

Having a pickup truck can be a great asset.  There always seems to be something that can be hauled away or picked up if you have a pickup truck.  The downside to a pickup truck is that the items in the back are exposed to the outside elements.  Items in the back are also more susceptible to theft because they are not locked up.

If you so choose, you can add a camper top to your pickup in order to address these issues.

  1. Measure your pickup truck’s bed.  Remember the old adage – measure twice, cut once.  There are no cuts involved, but the point is that accuracy matters.  You will want to purchase a camper top that fits your particular truck.  Be certain to measure the length, width, and depth.

  2. Measure your truck’s payload capacity.  Overloading your truck can cause damage to the shocks and overall suspension system.  An appropriate scale can be found at any highway truck weigh station.  Local agents may be able to assist you with characteristics of an overloaded vehicle as you approach the scale.

  3. Visit a local truck dealer.  Once you have your truck bed and payload metrics, take that information to a local truck dealer.  They can help you select a camper top that both fits your needs, and your truck.  Make sure that you consider the weight of the camper that you are purchasing when thinking about your payload capacity.  Depending on your specific needs, you may not want to sacrifice on payload.

  4. Purchase the camper top of your choice.  If you purchase your camper top from your local dealer, they may be able to install it for you.  Ask your dealer about this service before committing to a purchase.
