How to Make Homemade Wood Clocks

Homemade wood clocks are simple to build and it doesn't take an experienced woodworker to make them. Each wooden clock is unique because of the different shapes, sizes and patterns of the wood. You can make homemade wood clocks to give as gifts or sell them at flea markets or swap meets.

Items Needed:



  • Chainsaw (optional)

  • Piece of wood

  • 50 grit sandpaper

  • 80 grit sandpaper

  • 120 grit sandpaper

  • Measuring tape

  • Pencil

  • Drill and drill bit

  • Old rag

  • Resin

  • Paintbrush

  • Clock kit

  • Super glue

  • Hanger

  • Screwdriver

  • 2 AA batteries


 Instructions



  1. Cut a piece of wood about 1 1/2 inches thick with a chainsaw or purchase a piece of wood for your clock.

  2. Sand the surface of the wood with 50 grit sandpaper to roughen the surface.

  3. Switch to 80 grit sandpaper and sand the top surface again.

  4. Finish sand the surface with 120 grit sandpaper.

  5. Measure and mark the center of the wood and drill a hole with a 5/16 inch drill bit.

  6. Wipe off the sandpaper dust from the wood with an old rag.

  7. Apply resin to the clock surface and around the edges with a paint brush to give the clock a shiny surface. Let the resin dry until it is hard and add additional coats of resin if desired.

  8. Retrieve the clock numbers from the clock kit and mark the position of each number on the clock. Place super glue on one of the numbers and attach the number to the clock in the correct position. Repeat for the remaining clock numbers.

  9. Install the clock mechanism on the back of the wood using the screws included in the kit.

  10. Attach the hanger to the back of the clock with a screwdriver.

  11. Affix the hour, minute and second hands to the clock mechanism on the front of the wood.

  12. Place two AA batteries into the battery holder on the clock mechanism on the back of the clock.

  13. Set the correct time by turning the dial control on the clock mechanism.
