How to Grow Organic Vegetables in Pots

Even if you do not have the space for a full garden in your backyard, you can still grow organic vegetables and enjoy a fresh harvest.  Organic vegetable plants do well in pots and can be kept indoors or outside.  Planting and growing fresh vegetables can be easily done in a few simple steps.

Things you will need:

  • Organic seeds

  • Pots

  • Pebbles

  • Organic compost soil

  • Spray bottle

  • Organic fertilizer

  1. Choose which pots you will use to plant your organic vegetables.  Any regular plant pot will work.  Try to choose ones that the plant can grow into as it gets bigger to avoid having to repot it.  Drainage holes on the bottom of the pot are also important, as it allows oxygen flow and drains off extra water.

  2. Purchase organic seeds and compost soil, which can be found at home improvement or garden stores.  You can also mix one part organic potting soil with one part compost.  When purchasing seeds, look for packages that are specifically labeled organic to ensure no chemicals were used.

  3. Place about 1 or 2 inches of pebbles in the bottom of the pot.  The rocks will help water to drain out of the pot, preventing root rot.  Water pooling in the bottom of the pot is one of the major reasons potted gardens die.

  4. Fill the pot with compost and soil mix, leaving about 1 inch at the top.  Place the seeds into the soil.  Refer the instructions on the seed package for specific planting instructions, including depth and spacing.

  5. Cover the seeds completely with soil and mist lightly with a spray bottle.  Use the spray bottle to water the vegetables until the seeds began to take root.  Pouring water onto the plant may displace the seeds.

  6. Water the vegetable plant daily, adding enough liquid until the soil is moist, but not saturated.  Keep the pot in a sunny room, next to a window or outside so that it receives plenty of sunshine.

  7. Consider using an organic fertilizer for your vegetable plants.  Roots of plants in pots have a limited reach and therefore limited nutrition supply.  Follow the directions on the package of organic fertilizer when determining when and how often to apply the fertilizer.
