How to Enroll Your Child in Kindergarten

Can you believe that your baby is almost five years old? Soon he/she will be starting kindergarten. It seems like yesterday when you brought him/her home from the hospital. Time flies. Now, it's time to enroll in kindergarten. Here is what you need to do.

  1. Decide what school you would like your child to attend. If your child will attend a public school, you do not have a choice. Your child’s school will be determined by the location of your home. If you would rather send your child to a private school, you should decide which school you want your child to attend.

  2. Contact the school by phone and ask what procedures should be followed for enrolling in kindergarten. Each school’s procedures may vary.

  3. You will need to fill out some paperwork for enrollment. You will be asked pertinent information such as name, address, phone numbers and emergency contact information.

  4. Your child will be required to have a physical before enrolling in school. You will need to set up an appointment with your family physician. The physical is to make sure your child has had the required shots and is in healthy condition. This is for the safety of all students enrolled at the school.

  5. The school will give you a specific date on which you and your child should visit the school. You will be able to turn in all of your paperwork, physical and any book fees. You may even get a chance to meet your child’s teacher, see the room where your child will learn and get a list of supplies needed for kindergarten.
