How to Donate a Car to Battered Women
For those who are looking to donate a car, donating a car to a battered women's shelter or organization is an excellent way to help those who have left abusive relationships achieve their independence. There are several steps you should follow when you are donating a car.
- Look in the phone book to obtain a list of battered women's shelters, as well as a list of organizations that are dedicated to providing services to battered women.
- Call the different organizations to determine who is able to accept a vehicle as a donation.
- Research the organizations or shelters to see the different services they provide to battered women and to help you determine to which one you would like to donate your car.
- Call the director of the shelter or organization, and let them know that you would like to donate your car to them. Ask the director whether they would prefer for you to bring the car to them, or have someone pick up the car. Since the location of many battered women's shelters may be kept confidential, they may request that someone come pick it up.
- Make sure the title of the car is clear and can be transferred over to someone else.
- Determine the value of the car. This will allow the organization to write you a receipt that you can use for tax purposes.
- Drop off your vehicle or have it picked up according to the arrangements you have made with the director.
- Transfer the title over to the charity. You should also inform your state's department of motor vehicles that you have transferred the title over to someone else.
- Obtain a receipt from the organization to keep on file and use for tax purposes.
