How to Care for Commercial Vehicles

Caring for your commercial vehicles properly is essential to keeping your business expenses at a minimum.  All company employees that use the vehicles on a regular basis must clean them regularly, and report any problems immediately.  In addition to holding your employees responsible for minor maintenance, it’s important to check your vehicles frequently and take them to an auto shop when necessary.

• Keep track of where your commercial vehicles are at all times.  If your company vehicles are used by a few different people throughout the week, keep a timesheet that employees must sign whenever they take one of the vehicles out. 


• Talk to your employees about their responsibilities while driving company vehicles.  Although you are responsible for all repairs and general upkeep of your commercial vehicles, your employees must comply with a few basic rules and regulations such as cleaning and reporting problems.  Ask all employees to treat company vehicles as they would their own cars. 


• Get your commercial vehicles checked out by a mechanic on a regular basis.  To ensure that your commercial vehicles are operating properly, it’s important to have them inspected by a professional mechanic as often as necessary.  Regular maintenance will prolong the life of the vehicles and ensure your employees’ safety on the road.


• Check all of your vehicles every week.  Although your employees are responsible for reporting any mechanical problems immediately, they may hesitate to do so out of fear that they will be blamed.  In addition to encouraging employees to come forward when they notice any problems, it’s important to check all vehicles regularly.  Set a weekly day and time when you can do a thorough inspection of your commercial vehicles to make sure all are in working order.
