How to Become a Computer Tech

For a computer tech, no two work days are a like. Computer technicians provide a wide-range of services, including computer and hardware repair, customer support and even training for computer users. Due to this varied atmosphere, a computer tech must be trained in many different aspects of computer repair and operation.

• Explore your interests from a young age. If you have an interest in computers and becoming a computer technician, it is a good idea to take advantage of the classes that are offered at your high school. Oftentimes, high schools will offer their students a wide variety of computer-related courses. This can be a great way to expand your knowledge and gain exposure to various computers and operating systems.


• Complete your secondary education. Enrolling in college is a must, whether you decide to attend a traditional four-year school or elect to attend a two-year or vocational school. Most four-year colleges offer bachelor's degrees in various computer programs, including computer programming. You will also find various computer programs at two-year colleges and other vocational schools. Do some research to find a school that is best suited to your needs. Apply to the college and enroll in their computer program. It is important that you take the time to study and complete your courses with the goal of obtaining a degree.


• Work and learn independently. Take the time to explore your interests on your own. While in school, work on various types of computers and hardware. Take advantage of opportunities to repair your own computer and the computers of friends and family members. This will give you valuable hands-on learning experience and exposure to a wide variety of computers and hardware.


• Take advantage of any internship opportunities that come your way. Speak with a college advisor regarding any available computer tech internships. Most internships are unpaid, but they can provide you with a valuable hands-on learning experience.


• Become certified. Many different computer companies, such as Microsoft and Cisco, offer independent certifications to computer technicians. Learn about the certification requirements and take the time to complete the certification process.
