How To Update a GPS

When in a new part of town or traveling, many people use GPS systems to help navigate unfamiliar areas. They are convenient, all you have to enter is one address to the next, and then you have a map. However, if this GPS is not updated regularly, it can lead to your system not working as it should. When it is outdated, you can run into construction and road closures. Follow these steps to update your GPS.

  1. Take the USB cable that came with your GPS system. Plug the GPS into your computer's USB slot. Turn the GPS on after you have it plugged into your computer.

  2. Use the CD that came with your GPS system, or you can head to the manufacturer's website for a list of updates available for download. If using the CD, click the download button to install updates. If using the GPS manufactures' site, find your model number and see the updates available, and then click on the download link.

  3. Follow the directions on the GPS screen for installing the updates. These are typically straightforward and it is a matter of clicking “Yes” “Next” and “Finished or Completed.” When the downloads are being installed, do not turn off or unplug your GPS from your computer; if you do, the updates will not complete.

  4. Wait for the message on your GPS system that indicates the updates are completed. Power off the GPS and unplug it from the computer.  You now have your GPS system fully updated and can begin using it. Remember to check for new updates every month or two, especially if you rely on your GPS for daily navigation.
