How Does a Beauty Supply Store Owner Spend a Workday?

A beauty supply store is where salon owners as well as hairdressers go to get great buys on the products they use. The store is constantly receiving orders of new merchandise to display to customers as well as trusted popular merchandise. The storeowner has a very busy, important job every day.

The beauty supply owner has great responsibility daily from the start of the day to the end of the day.



  • At the beginning of the day, the storeowner unlocks the store to get inside to do start of the day business.

  • The owner walks through the store and looks over every aisle and display. The he checks to be assured that there is plenty of stock on the shelves and that the shelves are displayed correctly. Then they check to see that any extra display units are done as needed. This includes the window displays. The store is then checked for cleanliness.

  • The registers are prepared for the day's business. All drawers are filled with the correct amount of cash and change. This is done for each drawer or each employee based on how the store does its drawers.

  • When the employees arrive, he then opens the store for the day.

  • After the employees are settled to run the store, the owner takes care of other tasks that need to be done. Emails need to be gone over and phone messages listened too.

  • The owner and the employees work together to fill any orders that need to be shipped out. The orders have to be picked and packed before they can be shipped. This includes phone or website orders if there is a store website.

  • The next item of business will be payroll if it is the day for that to be done. Other tasks included in the administrative duties would be employee benefits, working with tax information, employees hours schedule, employees duty sheets, employee folders or employee training information. Not all jobs need to be done daily but they are still imperative to keep the store running smoothly.

  • The owner may help with the check out stations and also greet at the front door. Any customer service duties are also a part of daily work. They may help customers choose the product that best meets their needs as well as show new products. When customers have complaints, they may speak with the owner.

  • The storeowner checks the store inventory every day. This is done all day long with reports from sales. The store inventory on the shelves is done about once or twice a week also. This is how orders for are figured on. The owner will then order from wholesale suppliers to receive his needed merchandise. When the orders are received, the owner inspects them to make sure he received all of the products he ordered. Then either he or an employee will put the merchandise on the shelves.


Before he leaves for the day, he runs any financial reports that are required by government agencies as well as for his accountant. He checks to make sure there is enough employees at the store for the night to cover as well as the following day. When the owner leaves for the day, he takes a deposit to the bank.
