How to Expand Services in Hair Salons

About Going Green in Salons

Many salons are going green by saving energy and using less or no chemical products.  Going au natural is tough especially when the majority of the professional hair, make-up and skin care products are loaded with toxic chemicals.  Yet, more and more brave intrepid cosmology professionals are shunning chemical-laced products and embracing more natural solutions utilized by beauties long ago.

Green salons are not only lowering their carbon footprint by changing to low wattage LED and halide light bulbs, but many are going much further in their quest to become eco-friendly.

Natural aesthetic work environment.  Many salons are changing out the plastic modern funk look for natural wood flooring, and energy star rated appliances.

Recycling hair.  Hair can be used for various purposes including mopping up oil spills.

Removing toxic products.  Substituting natural, chemical-free products used on hair and skin not only is easier for the technician to work with, but is far more pleasant for the client as well.  Ammonia stench is no longer wafting out the door three blocks down the street.  Customers can walk into a salon wafting with the scent of lavender and coconut.

Water usage.  Low flow showerheads and low flow faucets along with water reclamation technology is helping salons lower their water footprint. Water reclamation takes gray water and reuses it in the landscaping or toilets.  This process saves over 70 percent of the water from going into the sewage system.

Openness to new technology.  Sustainability is the new buzzword in the salon world.  Salon owners are becoming more educated as to the choices and technologies that are available to make their salons eco-friendly and sustained.  They are encouraged to explore energy sustainability and water sustainability as that technology emerges.
